About 6 months ago I was watching a news program on oil and one of the Forbes Bros. was the guest. This is out of context, but this is the actual question as asked. The host said to Forbes, "I am going to ask you a direct question and I would like a direct answer, how much oil does the U.S. have in the ground." The U. S. Geological Service issued a report in April ('08) that only scientists and oil men knew was coming, but man was it big. It was a revised report (hadn't been updated since '95) on how much oil was in this area of the western 2/3 of North Dakota ; western South Dakota ; and extreme eastern Montana .... check THIS out:
The Bakken is the largest domestic oil discovery since Alaska 's Prudhoe Bay , and has the potential to eliminate all American dependence on foreign oil. The Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimates it at 503 billion barrels. Even if just 10% of the oil is recoverable... at $107 a barrel, we're looking at a resource base worth more than $5.3 trillio 'When I first briefed legislators on this, you could practically see their jaws hit the floor. They had no idea..' says Terry Johnson, the Montana Legislature's financial analyst.
'This sizable find is now the highest-producing onshore oil field found in the past 56 years' reports, The Pittsburgh Post Gazette. It's a formation known as the Williston Basin , but is more commonly referred to as the 'Bakken.' And it stretches from Northern Montana, through North Dakota and into Canada . For years, U. S. oil exploration has been considered a dead end. Even the 'Big Oil' companies gave up searching for major oil wells decades ago. However, a recent technological breakthrough has opened up the Bakken's massive reserves.... and we now have access of up to 500 billion barrels. And because this is light, sweet oil, those billions of barrels will cost Americans just $16 PER BARREL!

James Bartis, lead researcher with the study says we've got more oil in this very compact area than the entire Middle East -more than 2 TRILLION barrels untapped. Don't think 'OPEC' will drop its price - even with this find? Think again! It's all about the competitive marketplace, - it has to. Think OPEC just might be funding the environmentalists?

So I'm an avid backpacker hiker Yeah i like cheap gas but not at the expense of the Rocky Mountians, i mean come on has our greed of gold/oil gotten the better of us.
we have FEET use them as they are for walking. yeah hard to walk 33 miles to work. get a bike. yeah i know michigan don't provide bike lanes. it's harder to do the good things. but if we use all our oil then we won't be the rich land will we? another way to look at it for the greedy people!

but we have 1 land one earth one naturally beauty and most want to ruin it because they are LAZY! i'm lazy too and love being lazy. but if you dig in our natural beautiful places we won't have anything left.!
look at other countries' and what they preserved. why do poeople go to these countries to site see or to see their oil wells? whey do some people come here to the states? (to be free) but what about our sites our views America is BEATUIFUL lets keep it that way!
this hole things reminds me of a Saved by the Bell show. where they wanted to drill for oil by the school and Zack and the crew showed them how it wouldn't work. they tried it anyway and didn't listen to the kids and animals died. Yes paying for gas sucks i'm the first to admit that. but if i have to pay higher gas to keep our land from being drilled on. then so be it!
